City officials celebrated the deal, and rightfully so. It fulfills a decadelong effort to preserve open space critical to the health of Pleasure House Creek and the Lynnhaven River.

The financial difficulties that contributed to the failure of the Sandler brothers plan ultimately helped the city and the conservation groups secure the property southwest of the Lesner Bridge. They’ll pay $13 million, including up to $5 million from the city and $1 million from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
